Learning Target: To build a community in the classroom and understand why that will improve your education.

Definition of Psychology: The science of behavior and mental processes.

Circle Question: Name a bizarre behavior you have witnessed and what do you think the motivation behind it was?

Using Psychology to make decisions: Cell Phone and Multi-Tasking article: At your table read the articles.  After reading the articles, what conclusions can you draw?  Is the article biased?  Does the information seem valid?  Is there information missing?  Do you question some of the conclusions?  Can you think of counter arguments that would support kids using phones during class time other than for doing research when you don't have a computer?  If you were an Educational Psychologist what recommendation would you make? Remember, you need to consider others as well as yourself when making this policy?  Share your responses with the people at your table and be ready to report out on your findings.


MB Exercise: Handout of Short MB test.  Using your phone, ironic I know, read your profile. What does it tell you about yourself?  What does it tell you about the others in the class?   How does it feel that someone can know you that well without ever having met you?

Textbook: Next class you will be receiving your textbook.  We will be working with Ms. Danis on effective reading strategies.


Homework: Using your MB profile research yourself online.  After doing some research answer the following questions: What do you see as your strengths in terms of being successful in AP?  What do you see as your weaknesses as it would relate to your success in AP? What could you do as a result of this knowledge to help you in this class?  Please use the information you gathered from your profile to support your answers.

Circle:  Is there anything we could do differently as a school and/or community to make school a better place for everyone?  Meaning to help everyone reach their full potential.

Target 1:  Learning how to build a community in the classroom.

By the End of the Period: You will know the names of people in this class and be more comfortable being here.

Homework Check: Why are you taking AP?

Activity: Why do think people are taking  AP?  At your table brainstorm a list of reasons you believe people take AP Psychology or even AP classes in general?  Because they want the challenge?  The deeper question would be why do some students want the challenge while so many others don't? Could it be related to parents, financial situation, peers, sports, genetics, birth order, brain size etc...
At your table:

1. You will write down on separate cards the reasons you believe you are taking AP.

2. Next, without using names, look around the room, why do you think others people in the class are taking AP?

3. Sort cards according to categories.

4. Whip around.  New insights to why you are here?

5. 5 minutes to write: What has changed about how you see your motivation and others in the class.

6. Share out.

Activity:Putting Grit in its place


Transcript Activity:  How do you explain the difference?  Why are these two so different?  In a group of three/four use your best investigative skill to figure out why these two kids are so different.  What are all the factors that could account for the very different transcripts.  Be ready to report out  your findings.
