What do you notice about the people on the other side of the room?
What observations can you make?
What do you now understand about them, yourselves?
How could this help you in life?
In other words, think of the ways it would be useful to understand yourself as well as other around you.
Introduce Six Major Psychological Perspectives/Hand
Perspectives Activity: New student comes to school. Doesn't really make much effort to get to know people. Sits by himself in class and the cafeteria. Has poor attendance and doesn't do any homework. Does not like to talk in class and refuses to work in groups to the point he becomes very agitated. He is failing most of his classes and it appears that he is not using the best personal hygiene practices. In other words, he smells.

You will be doing this in groups of 2-3 and you will put together a brief presentation explaining how each perspective would explain the behavior.
Homework:Self Assessment Activity

This should address grades, homework completion, relationships with teachers, relationships with peers, intelligence, self-confidence and outlook on your future. Target: Understanding perspective and how your perspective shapes your world.
Circle: Name a bizarre behavior that you have witnessed. How would you explain it?
Homework: Collect love definitions
Next Class: What if I could predict your grade for the semester based on this homework assignment? I will record a grade for you. How close do you think I can get?
Activity: How many different perspectives can we look at "LOVE" from? Partner up with someone your table then partner up with two from the other table. Pick someone to record responses. How many can you come up with? We will list these on the board.
Connection between perspective and mental illness: Imagine you are famous, you are loved and adored by millions, your career is successful beyond your wildest dreams, you have a loving spouse, you have children that love you, you have beautiful houses, cars, boats and whatever else money can buy. How great would your life be? Would you want to live this life?
Why would he kill himself? What was his perspective? How could he see the world so bleakly? Remember, we all see the world through our own eyes. Mental illness changes our perspective in such dramatic fashion that even people who have the world in their hand (from our perspective) can see the world in such dark terms that sometimes they can't go on.
Understanding the power of your own perspective: Why you see things the way you do. How you make sense of the world. How you interact with the world.
"Perception involves all the ways of becoming aware of things, people, happenings, or ideas. Judgement involves all the ways of coming to conclusions about what has been perceived. If people differ systematically in what they perceive and in how they reach conclusions, then it is only reasonable for them to differ correspondingly in their interest reactions, values, motivations and skills." -C.G. Jung
